OCHRE AND CHARCOAL
PAINT, PAPER. 2015.
This monotype suite took shape while I was considering the impact of charcoal and ochre on our early human ancestors. These materials enabled some of the first intentional markers of identity, and were instrumental in developing a visual language of belonging, community, and otherness. The colors primarily associated with charcoal and ochre—black, red, and yellow—were the first colors (excluding white) to be named and given existence in the ancient predecessors of our modern languages.
