This was my first project for a sculpture course at college. Our prompt was to create a three-dimensional object from a roll of paper approximately 15’ x 3’, without the use of adhesives. It began as a struggle to shape the paper to my expectations; I did not consider the permanent curvature that the paper had gained while rolled, nor did I realize that by manipulating and creasing the paper I was leaving behind indelible marks. In a lesson of material memory, once I understood that I needed to utilize the already existing elements—rather than trying to fold them back or iron them out—the process became much less frustrating.

I would also like to acknowledge and thank the passing theater professor who saw me struggling to photograph my sculpture under fluorescent lighting, and offered me the use of an entirely black rehearsal room equipped with directional colored lighting to aid with the documentation.
